Legislation Cracking Down on Puppy Mills Advances in House

A bill laying out rules and regulations large scale dog breeders would have to follow has passed a Michigan House committee.

State Representative Mike McCready is sponsoring the bill and says it would ensure moms and their pups aren’t kept in cramped, unsanitary conditions.

He says puppies bred in puppy mills haven’t had any veterinarian care or shots so it’s hard to know what you’re really getting when you buy one until you get the dog home.

The measure also requires large-scale breeders to register with the state at a cost of $500.

The bill was also changed to require the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to report back to lawmakers each year with how many breeders have registered with the state and how many have been inspected by local animal control.

The legislation now awaits a vote in the full Michigan House.
