The governor has signed a bill into law aimed at cutting in to a substitute teacher shortage in the state.
The new law will allow retired teachers to return to the district they retired from – and not lose their pension benefits or health benefits – so long as they are filling a critical position.
State Representative Holly Hughes sponsored the bill and says it reverses a law enacted years ago after a school superintendent was caught double-dipping.
Under the previous law a retired teacher could return to the classroom but only if it’s in a different district than the one they retired from.
