Gov Signs Bill Adding DOC Officers to Carry in Gun Free Zones

Retired and off-duty Department of Corrections’ (DOC) officers would be added to the list of those allowed to carry a gun in gun free zones, under a legislation signed by the governor Monday.

Currently in Michigan, you can’t carry a pistol into a school, hospital or sports stadium because they are no-carry zones.

One of the legislative sponsors, Senator Rick Jones says it will add retired and off-duty DOC officers and other to the list of individuals who are exempt from gun free zone laws.

He says the change is necessary so corrections officers can protect themselves.
