The governor’s interest in moving to a statewide port authority is making some lawmakers nervous.
Rick Snyder’s office confirms he’s interested in creating a Michigan Port Authority but won’t release any other details including if and when one could be created.
The concept, though, has State Representative Bill LaVoy worried about losing local control.
LaVoy, a Democrat, says locals know best and should have control over their port.
State Representative Jason Sheppard, a Republican, agrees. He says having a locally run port is a good draw for businesses looking to move into Michigan.
Sheppard, who chairs a port subcommittee in the House, says nothing formal has come across his desk to move towards a statewide port authority.
