Gov Comfortable With Current Immunization Waiver Policy

Governor Rick Snyder says the state’s current immunization rule, which requires parents visit their county public health department and talk to a nurse before signing an immunization waiver, is the right way to go.

He says it’s a good middle ground between making it too easy for parents to opt their kids out of getting vaccines and completely doing away with Michigan’s philosophical waiver.

Michigan is one of the few states in the country that allows parents to forgo getting their kids vaccinated for reasons other than medical or religious objections.

A bill introduced in the Michigan House this month would do away with the rule requiring parents to visit their local public health department.

That legislation is expected to get a hearing before a House committee when lawmakers return to Lansing after the first of the year.
