Good Turnout for Heikenpaiva 2014

heiksignAlthough temperatures barely got above zero, a great crowd showed up for Heikenpaiva this weekend. The event commemorates Saint Henrik’s Day, who is the patron saint of Findland. A Finnish-themed parade marched down Quincy Street in downtown Hancock, with David Maki, this year’s Hankooki Heikkie riding alongside his daughter in the world’s largest kicksled. Finnish Theme Committee Co-Chair Jim Kurtti says it’s a local event that uses the Finnish culture to bring the community together.

Along with the Tori Market, kicksleds and the wife-carrying contest, there was the return of the Polar Bear Dive, which had a good turnout in spite of the harsh weather conditions.
