GLHL

The Great Lakes Hockey League is growing. At the league’s annual meeting over the weekend, three new teams were added. The new team in Marinette will be called the M and M Shamrocks, a name that dates back to the 1930s. The Sun Prairie Killer Bees are moving in from the American Premiere Hockey League, and are located northeast of Madison. The new Verona team will be located in a southwest Madison suburb.

Next year’s GLHL tournament has been set for March 27th through 30th in Eagle River. The Gibson Cup series between the Pioneers and Wolverines will be staged the first weekend in April.

NHL

In opening-round NHL tournament play yesterday…
• The Knicks got past the 76ers 97-92. New York leads that series 3-1.
• The Clippers clipped the Mavericks 116-111. That set is tied 2-2.
• The Pacers bounced the Bucks 126-113. Indiana is up 3-1 in that series.
• The Timberwolves dispatch the Suns 122-116. Minnesota sweeps that set 4-0.

Tonight…
• The Celtics visit the Heat. Boston leads that series 2-1.
• The Pelicans host the Thunder. Oklahoma City has a 3-0 lead in that set.

The NHL draft will take place a week from tomorrow. The date was announced over the weekend, along with the odds for the 16 teams that did not make the playoffs this year getting the top pick. The Red Wings are 15th on that list, with a half-percent chance. And, even if that were to happen, they still wouldn’t pick first. A new league rule mandates that a team can move no more than 10 positions up. The Sharks have the best odds, at 18.5 percent.

MLB

The Tigers spotted the Royals a run in the top of the first yesterday, but Wenceel Pérez’ first major league home run with Mark Canha on base brought Detroit back in the bottom of the inning. That was all the cushion Tarik Skubal needed as he gave up only two more hits through the seventh inning, and Detroit claimed a 4-1 victory. Jake Rogers also homered.

After taking two of three from Kansas City, the Tigers host the Cardinals tonight. Kenta Maeda will start against Steven Matz. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers suffered their second straight lopsided loss to the Yankees yesterday, falling 15-5. New York scored on in the first. The rest of the runs came from the fifth inning on. Jake Bauers homered for the Crew, and moved over from first base to pitch the ninth inning. Tobias Myers went five innings, and gave up four runs on five hits – two were home runs. In their two weekend games, Milwaukee was outscored 30-8.

The Brewers entertain the Rays tonight. Bryse Wilson will pitch against Ryan Pepiot.
