Gladstone City Commissions Recall Election Scheduled

A special election is set for May 5th for the recall of three Gladstone City Commissioners.

Hugo Mattonen, Joe Maki, and Dave Nemecheck were targeted for recall because they voted last year to raise the city’s millage without having a public hearing.

The city commission said at the time that because its vote merely restored a previous millage level, it was not a “tax increase”, and no public hearing was required by law.

Delta County Clerk Nancy Kolich says that under the state law governing recalls that changed last year, the ballot will not have a “yes” or “no” vote to recall the commissioners. Instead, the three men will be on the ballot as candidates, alongside any other residents who file to run for the city commission.

Kolich says that others who want to be on the ballot have until February 26th to get their petitions into the Gladstone City Clerk’s office.
