Ghetto Conditions Described By Hancock Residents

Drug houses, derelict homes, plummeting property values–these aren’t the slums of a major city, but how some people are describing living in Hancock.

Some Hancock residents spoke before the city council at Wednesday’s regular meeting to try spur the city’s leaders to do something about what they perceive is happening in their neighborhoods.

Among the complaints were homes that are rotting, falling apart and filled with garbage; drug users in plain view—growing, selling and using.

Certain rental units were singled out by the residents as hotbeds for these kinds of activities.

Hancock Mayor Lisa McKenzie says the council has had discussions about developing ordinances to give the city more authority to deal with problem houses.

Mayor McKenzie said the picture painted by the residents wasn’t pretty and though it’s still only a few bad apples, they need to be dealt with.
