The price of gasoline will be going up on Sunday, and it won’t have anything to do with OPEC, or refinery problems. The Michigan gasoline tax will increase 7.3 cents per gallon as part of the road funding package passed earlier this year by the legislature, and signed by Governor Rick Snyder. The measure also increased vehicle registration fees by 20 percent beginning next year. While we’ll feel the pain at the pump right away, it could take a while for us to see the results beneath our tires. County Road Association of Michigan director Denise Donohue says less than 18 percent of Michigan’s highways are in good condition, and local roads and bridges are in even worse shape. By the time the new funding package is fully implemented in 2021, the CRA estimates it will have provided only about half of what is necessary to meet the need.
