Gas prices have dropped a bit. AAA Michigan reports that Michigan’s current statewide average is about $2.41 per gallon. That’s about seven cents less than last week’s average and about $1.21 less than this same time last year. The U.P. is a bit beneath the average – Marquette is at $2.39 per gallon.
Meanwhile, the average American driver is burning less fuel than at any time in the past 30 years. Michael Sivak of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute says we’re using 11 percent less fuel in personal vehicles than we were just 10 years ago… even though the population has increased by eight percent. Sivak says several factors can be credited for the reduction, including the slow economy, increased use of telecommuting and public transportation, and cars that use less gas.
