Former state lawmakers Todd Courser and Cindy Gamrat made their first appearance in court Tuesday to face felony charges stemming from an investigation into the cover-up of their sex scandal.
Courser was arraigned in Ingham County District court on one count of perjury and three counts of misconduct while Cindy Gamrat was charged with two counts of misconduct.
The perjury charge is punishable by up to 15 years in prison while the misconduct charges carry a five year prison sentence.
Attorney General Bill Schuette filed the charges last week saying the two lied during a House committee investigation into the misuse of state resources.
Courser says he doesn’t know what the Attorney General is looking at, but thinks the charges are baseless and he’ll continue to fight them.
Gamrat’s lawyer, Mike Nichols, says he thinks the Attorney General is like a kid beating a piñata that’s long since been spent.
Both Courser and Gamrat are due back in court March 15th.
