Follow an Immigrant's Footsteps Event

CALUMET – Keweenaw National Historical Park (KNHP) and Western U.P. Health Department (WUPHD) invite the public to a free historical tour and fitness walk next Tuesday evening, July 12 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in Calumet.  The guided walk, titled Follow an Immigrant’s Footsteps, will cover 2 miles on mostly level terrain. Participants should arrive at the KNHP Calumet Visitor Center in the Historic Union Building by 5:30 and dress comfortably for the weather conditions.

The tour will take guests along paths frequented by our immigrant ancestors when they first arrived in the Copper Country. Transportation methods, boardinghouses, and churches will be among the historic venues highlighted.

The walk is the ninth event in a series of Step Into History activities hosted by Keweenaw NHP and WUPHD through a grant from the National Park Foundation’s Active Trails program.

The local park was one of 25 national parks selected to receive a 2016 Active Trails grant from the National Park Foundation. The park, in partnership with the health department, is hosting 15 walks and other healthy activities throughout 2016.

The event is free, with no pre-registration required.
