Flint Water Crisis Focus of Democratic Debate

The Flint water crisis, the auto bailout and the recent shooting spree in Kalamazoo were all topics in Sunday night’s Democratic Presidential Debate in Flint.

Both candidates were asked what they would do to rebuild trust with Flint residents who feel they’ve been lied to about the quality of their water.

Senator Bernie Sanders says, if elected president, he would make sure water in all communities in the U.S. is tested and that the people are told about the quality of the water they’re drinking.

Hillary Clinton says she wants to take that a step further and eliminate lead wherever it is.

She says lead is also found in soil and paint in older homes.

Both candidates also called for the resignation or recall of Governor Rick Snyder for his handling of the Flint water crisis.

On the auto industry bailout, Clinton noted that she voted for the plan that saved 4 million jobs, while Sanders voted against it.

Sanders says he voted against the Wall Street bailout, which included the auto industry restructuring, because he didn’t want to bailout the billionaires that destroyed the economy.

The father of the teen girl who survived last month’s shooting spree in Kalamazoo asked the candidates what they would do to end gun violence.

Clinton says she would end lawsuit immunity for gun manufacturers and sellers.

But Sanders says gun makers and sellers should not be held accountable for the actions of those who passed background checks.

The debate came ahead of Michigan’s primary election Tuesday.
