A Flint Democrat wants Michigan’s governor to forgive Flint Public Schools’ $5.5 million in debt,
State Representative Sheldon Neeley says that money could then be spent on educating kids who may wind up with developmental disabilities from drinking water contaminated with lead.
He says there’s no way to know how much that could cost.
However, Neeley notes most of the children impacted by high lead levels in the city’s water are under the age of 6 which means many will spend over 10 years in the school system.
Neeley says schools in Flint should start working now to put programs in place to help kids who may have learning difficulties, but the district won’t have the money to do that unless the state makes the districts’ debt disappear.
