Final Day Of Firearms Deer Season

As the firearms deer season in Michigan comes to a close, so far, the take seems to be meeting what was forecast by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Chad Stewart of the DNR says while statewide participation numbers are down a bit, the harvest in the Lower Peninsula is encouraging and could exceed their pre-season expectations.

At the same time, DNR biologists say in the UP both numbers are down from last year, although the animals are older and in decent condition.

Stewart says it has been a very safe season and both Bovine T.B. and Chronic Wasting Disease have been under control, although a fourth potential case of CWD is being examined in Clinton County.

Three earlier cases of CWD were found in a small area in Meridian Township in Ingham County just east of Lansing.

CWD is a fatal neurological disease threatening white-tailed deer.

The firearm deer hunting season ends just after sundown on Monday.
