Michigan could soon run out of space for female inmates. The Michigan Radio Network has learned that Michigan is 80 female inmates away from being overcrowded at the state’s only female prison in Ypsilanti. The potential problem is caused by female inmates coming into the system at a faster rate than before. The Ypsilanti facility has 2,190 beds. State Corrections Director Dan Heyns says they have alternatives in place to take the overflow, if they reach capacity. In the past, overflow for male inmates has gone into county jails.
