Federal Flood Disaster Request Approved

Houghton County will receive assistance from the federal government to recover from the Father’s Day flood. The White House released a statement this morning, saying that President Donald Trump has approved the State of Michigan’s request for a disaster declaration.

Menominee and Gogebic Counties were also included in the declaration. Some places in Houghton County received more than seven inches of rain in the early morning hours of June 18th, which caused flooding, landslides, and road and bridge washouts. The order empowers federal agencies to provide recovery assistance. Money may also be available to support efforts to mitigate future problems.

The new funds will augment two-million dollars which the federal government already provided the state to assist with road repairs.
