Farmer's Market Opens In Downtown Houghton

Houghton Farmer's MarketFresh from the farm to the city.

The first Downtown Houghton Farmer’s Market was held near the waterfront Tuesday, featuring fresh produce and homemade goods.

Planning committee member Chelsea Goodreau talks about the need for Houghton to feature a market of its own.

Goodreau said, “It was something that was lacking. It was also something that was in the plan for downtown Houghton to get started and there’s just a group of people who felt it was necessary to just create more access and more opportunity for our local growers.”

A partnership with the Portage Lake District Library allows the market to be more than just a market, offering educational activities for families.

Kids got a chance to make a Mr. Potato Head the old fashion way…with real potatoes.

Goodreau said, “There’s opportunities for kids to get involved, get them started young and around whole foods and produce and we have educational opportunities so that people, if they don’t know how to prepare food, those are opportunities that we give them to learn how to prepare.”

The market will continue Tuesday afternoons throughout the summer.
