More than 100 law enforcement officers from across the Upper Peninsula paid tribute this morning to their colleagues who have been killed in the line of duty. At the Michigan Tech SDC, Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean told the assembly that Peace Officers Memorial Day has been observed across the nation since it was established in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy. Participants began their day with a brief ceremony in Calumet, then traveled by Motorcade to Houghton for the full service. Officers and family members of fallen officers also met for lunch. The Upper Peninsula Peace Officers Memorial Service is held in a different location each year.
