The lift bridge is an unlikely abode for many critters, but for a pair of peregrine falcons, it’s home sweet home.
Tech Today says the pair are likely the same birds who nested atop the lift bridge last year and raised three chicks.
This year, they chose the high nesting site even with all the road construction taking place.
The falcons returned in early April and Michigan Tech researchers have confirmed at least one egg in the nest box.
MTU School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science professor David Flaspohler worked with community members to set up an alternative nesting site, just in case the bridge work scared off the falcons.
But he says in an email that it wasn’t needed, and that MDOT has been accommodating and the birds seem to be doing well.
Flaspohler is also involved with getting a nest cam up at the site and emphasizes local interest as being key to making the project successful.
