Engler Touts No Labels

When former Michigan Governor John Engler was Michigan’s chief executive, he faced criticism from Democrats for being immovable from his partisan position on certain issues.

But he says what’s happening in Washington now is over the top.

He’s joined on to NoLabels (nolabels.org) which is pushing both parties to work together.

Engler, who remembers difficult political disputes while he served as Michigan governor in the 90s, says wanting to win on an issue is nothing new.

But he says Congress is now just about at a point where people not only insist on winning, they also insist that the other side loses, even if it’s something they want.

He is also calling on elected officials in Washington to stop worrying about losing primaries because of one or two votes, adding legislators rarely lose primaries anyway.

While he admits his Republican party has had its troubles lately with different factions, he stops short of blaming gridlock on one party or the other.
