This afternoon…the City of Hancock will be participating in the National Park Service’s initiative “Bells Across the Land: A Nation Remembers Appomattox,” commemorating the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War.
A ceremony will begin at 3:15pm at Lakeside Cemetery, where 11 Civil War veterans are buried. It will proceed to the Church of the Resurrection, where one additional veteran is interred in the Catholic Cemetery under the church.
Handbells will be rung at each location by those in attendance.
If you have a handbell, you are encouraged to bring it.
The Salvation Army will have a limited number of bells available.
Participants are invited to gather afterward at Habaneros Fresh Mexican Kitchen in the Scott Building (A.J. Scott was also a Civil War veteran).
Bells in Calumet and across the Copper Country will join those across the nation commemorating the 150th anniversary of Lee’s surrender to Grant at Appomattox Court House.
At 3:15 – the time of Lee’s surrender – bells will ring for four minutes – one minute for each year of the war.
