It’s Primary Election Day throughout the state.
Due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, absentee balloting is playing a big part in today’s election.
Houghton City Clerk Ann Vollrath.
I stopped by Precinct 1 to talk with voters and one voter had this to say.
Another voter said this.
This voter shared thoughts on the voting process.
Contested races in Houghton County include the Sheriff’s race between retired State Trooper Steve Laux and incumbent Sheriff Brian McLean.
The primary for that race would’ve likely settled the November election, as there was no democrat running, but last week Ann Newcombe, who has never held a job in law enforcement, entered the race as a write-in.
If she gets enough votes tonight, she’ll be on the November ballot against the winner of McLean and Laux.
Another important vote in Houghton County would give the public a bigger say in the sale of the waterfront parking deck.
A millage to fund the Calumet Colosseum and Community Center through 2027 is also on the ballot.
Millages to fund fire departments and road maintenance and improvements are also on most township ballots.
A list of ballot initiatives for Houghton County is here.
Primary coverage starts tonight at 8pm on 97.7 The Wolf.
I’ll be joined by Tony Pizzi and Glen Anderson, to bring you results for Houghton, Baraga, Keweenaw and Ontonagon Counties and what they could mean for November.
