Michigan State Police say preliminary reports indicate that eight people lost their lives in six separate traffic crashes during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
That compares to the 19 traffic crashes that killed 20 people during the holiday weekend last year.
According to the reports, two of the victims were not wearing their seat belts in two separate crashes, one of which involved alcohol.
One fatality occurred with an off road vehicle where alcohol use was a known factor and no helmet was worn.
The Memorial Day holiday weekend ran from 6 p.m. on Friday, May 22 through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 25.
