Michigan law enforcement are stepping up efforts to catch drunk drivers.
Police departments, sheriff’s offices and Michigan State Police have extra patrols on the state’s roadways until April 4.
Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning spokesman Kendall Wingrove says the period covers the NCAA basketball tournaments, spring break and St. Patrick’s Day.
He says a lot of people are in celebration mode, so they are encouraging motorists to make smart decisions like calling a taxi, designating a driver, or staying at a friend’s home.
Last year in Michigan, 2,182 people were arrested for drunk driving over the crackdown period.
Of those, 672 were charged under the state’s Super Drunk law, meaning they had a point-one-seven blood-alcohol-content or higher.
