Drug Overdose Deaths Outnumber Car Crash Deaths

There were 1,745 drug overdose deaths in Michigan in 2014, up 14-percent from 2013.

The 2014 numbers from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services are the most recent figures available.

With that many drug overdose fatalities in 2014, the state says it puts drug overdose above car crashes for the number 1 cause of injury-related deaths. 876 people died in car accidents that same year.

Opioid and heroin overdoses represent a large piece of the rising numbers, accounting for 57-percent of the deaths.

Wayne County had the most overdose deaths in Michigan in 2014 with 322 fatalities.

Next highest was Macomb County with 249 deaths.
