Drone No Fly Zone Bills Debated in House Committee

A Michigan House committee is considering a package of bills to regulate where people can fly drones.

The legislation would make it illegal to fly them near a prison, an electrical worker, firefighter or police officer. Brian Sadek, with the Wayne County Airport Authority, thinks airports should be included too.

He says a drone was spotted flying over the Detroit Metropolitan Airport’s McNamara Terminal two months ago.

Sadek says if lawmakers won’t outright ban people from flying drones near airports then they should at least allow airports to prohibit drones from flying in their airspace during specific events.

The sponsor of the bills says he’s open to making some changes but also doesn’t want to create a long list of places you can’t fly a drone.
