Lawmakers in the Michigan House have given the green light to an emergency spending bill to help keep the lights on at Detroit Public Schools.
The district says it will run out of money on April 8th.
The $48.7 million will cover DPS’ operating costs for the rest of the year.
House Speaker Kevin Cotter, R-Mt. Pleasant, says that should bide the legislature some time to hammer out a long-term overhaul of the cash-strapped district.
A second measure, which would extend the Financial Review Commission’s oversight to include DPS, also cleared the House.
Both bills now move over to the Michigan Senate.
There are still a handful of bills before a House committee designed to get DPS out of debt that also bake in academic reforms and strip away teacher’s collective bargaining rights.
