Douglas Edward Makela has been found guilty by a jury in the Houghton County 12 circuit court. Makela was arrested in September 2022 for resisting arrest and obstructing an officer. Due to an understaffed prosecutor’s office, and factors related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Makela’s case was delayed until County Prosecutor Dan Helmer took office. Helmer says he’s proud to have finished this case in trial, and thankful for careful jury deliberation. He adds that his office continues to work through a backlog of cases he inherited. Makela will remain lodged in the Houghton County Jail without bond until a sentencing hearing has been scheduled.
