Work has started to develop the Houghton Douglass Falls and Veterans Memorial Scenic Site. While work takes place the Michigan Department of Natural Resources will close the location temporarily.
The project will create a parking lot for visitors, install a vault toilet, and information kiosk, as well as pedestrian paths, a falls overlook, a veterans memorial, and fencing. Another phase of the project will build a pedestrian bridge. The DNR’s first project phase will have crews build a new site road and parking lot so that main work can begin in the spring.
The department anticipates requesting bids for the observation deck and paths early in 2025. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources purchased the Houghton Douglass Falls property in 2018 with funds from a 2015 Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund award of 300,000 dollars. To further develop the site the DNR expects to invest funds from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund and department budget allocations.
