The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is well underway with an aggressive campaign to stop Chronic Wasting Disease in its tracks.
CWD is a fatal neurological disease threatening white-tailed deer.
Three cases have been found in Michigan this year, all in a small area in Meridian township east of Lansing.
Dan O’Brien of the DNR says they have to stay on top of the problem because left unattended, it can be devastating to not only the deer population, it would severely affect hunting.
Thousands of hunter-harvested deer will be tested, according to O’Brien, who appeared before a legislative committee.
He says they’ve been reaching out to hunters and landowners to cooperate with them, saying their cooperation is the only way to successfully fight the disease.
So far its not believed the disease poses a threat to humans.
