Coyotes are becoming bolder across the state, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has issued some tips for dealing with them. Wildlife technician Hannah Schauer says coyotes are drawn to areas where food is plentiful. They are highly adaptable, and are found in every county in the state. She suggests removing accessible trash bins, bird feeders and pet food, and installing fencing around gardens and fruit trees. If you see a coyote, yelling at it and clapping might chase it off, and let it know it’s not welcome. Coyote hunting is open all year for Michigan residents with a valid base hunting license in approved areas.
