DNR Enforcing Noise Limits On Snowmobiles

If your snowmobile is too loud, you can get a ticket.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is reminding snowmobilers that state law does have decibel limits for their vehicles.

Conservation officers in the Western U.P. have been working patrols in the area following several complaints from residents who live near snowmobile trails.

For snowmobiles built after 1977, the decibel limit is 78 at 50 feet.  For snowmobiles built since mid-year 1980, the limit is 88 decibels at 13 point one feet.

The penalty for violating the sound levels for snowmobiles is a civil infraction, with fines up to $250.

DNR’s Sgt. Ryan Aho says conservation officers have issued tickets to numerous snowmobile operators this season whose sleds have well exceeded the 88-decibel limit.
