The state says it helped more than 170,000 Michigan consumers deal with insurance and financial services issues last year.
Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services spokeswoman Andrea Miller says an important aspect of the department’s job is reaching out to keep the public up to date about changes in the insurance and financial industries.
She says the DIFS outreach program visited 43 of the state’s 83 counties, helping boost the number of Michigan residents it helped in 2014.
In addition to answering consumer questions, Miller says DIFS also helped handle more than 5,500 complaints about insurance and financial services.
She says consumer complaints were up in 2014 compared to 2013.
Health insurance had the most complaints at 1,795. Next was auto insurance at 836.
