Representative Scott Dianda introduced a resolution this week calling on the federal government to take steps to protect Lake Superior from the threats of Asian carp. It has been noted that Asian carp are poised to enter the Great Lakes through the Chicago Area Waterway System, and the existing protections are not substantial enough to thwart the invasion. Dianda says Michigan’s economy can’t risk being hurt by invasive species because of its reliance on the tourism industry of the Great Lakes. Lake Superior is home to a thriving fish industry that its neighboring communities rely on. Dianda’s resolution calls on the federal government to take immediate steps to fortify the infrastructure at the Soo Locks to prevent the movement of Asian carp into Lake Superior.
