One local lawmaker who wasn’t surprised by the failure of Proposal One was 110th District Representative Scott Dianda.
Dianda said he didn’t believe the problem was that voters simply didn’t understand the proposal.
Dianda said the legislature needs to hold the Department of Transportation accountable for how they spend the money they are given
As one of 18 in the House who voted against putting this proposal on the ballot, Dianda says the Legislature will need to work long and hard to find a solution even if that means working throughout the summer break.
Statement from Rep. Scott Dianda (D-Calumet) on the failure of Proposal 1:
“Michigan voters have spoken loudly: they do not want Prop 1. They want us, the members of the Legislature, to do our jobs and make a plan to get our roads fixed. The people of the state of Michigan want us to hold the Department of Transportation accountable for how they spend the money they currently have. They want us to be innovative, to make sure we are getting the most out of every dollar. They want to know that their money is spent on road crews and blacktop – not a bloated, outdated bureaucracy. The Legislature needs to show the political courage to make cuts where cuts are needed and put every cent we can toward road repair. Then, and only then, can we in good conscience vote for a tax increase. It’s time to get back to work.”
