Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says he’s comfortable with his city taking in Syrian refugees.
Following the terrorist attacks in Paris, several governors, including Michigan’s, called for suspending efforts for settling Syrian refugees in the U.S. pending a review of the vetting process for immigrants, to ensure terrorists don’t come to the state.
But Duggan says he’s satisfied with the steps being taken by the Obama administration.
Duggan says, from his perspective, an approach that says we will fight the terrorists, but will provide refuge to their victims is what this country is about. He says Detroit stands prepared to do its share.
Duggan says he told the Obama administration that Detroit can host 50 families a year for the next three years. He says that’s a reasonable number for the city of Detroit.
The mayor made his comments while participating in a White House media conference call to discuss the U.S.’ existing refugee screening process.
