Demonstrators Call for Russian Shame Day

Today Adelina Oronova and Nazar Gora will hold another rally of support for their home country, Ukraine. Since Russia’s invasion into their home, Adelina and Nazar, have organized demonstrations in the Copper Country. Today May 9th, is traditionally known as Victory Day for citizens in Russia, in order to mark the day the Nazis surrendered to Soviet forces. But this year many groups and demonstrators across the world are calling for a Russian shame day instead.

It’s awful what is happening, and that’s why we will be having kids shoes displayed. Because we are talking about little human beings that will never be able to play with toys, or graduate, and enjoy life, because this possibility was taken, by Russian soldier(s). – Adelina Oronova, Co-Founder Yoopers for Ukraine

The demonstration today starts at 3 pm and will go until 6. Oronova expressed that the demonstration will be powerful, silent and a visual representation of the atrocities made by Russia. The group will place children’s shoes on the ground, as a symbol for the human rights violations happening in Ukraine, as a staunch counter to Russia’s typical celebrations made today.

This Saturday Yoopers for Ukraine will have a egg decorating event at Grace United Methodist Church from 4-8 pm. Pysanky, roughly translated to “to write or inscribe”, is a common central European decoration for people around Easter. Intricate designs are inscribed on egg shells using wax. Saturday’s class will be led by Luba Petrusha. Class space is limited to 30 people, and the group suggests making a donation of 35 dollars. Which will go to UCARE INC. to support relief and aid to children in Ukraine. Please contact Nadija at 502 510 9385 to sign up for Saturday’s event.

Later in the Month Yoopers for Ukraine will have a silent art auction and film showing at the Rozsa Center. The event is still being worked on, more details to come in the coming weeks. Each Wednesday passers-by see the Ukrainian flag and demonstrators at the Portage Lake Lift Bridge. The group’s walks begin at 5 pm each week.
