If you plan to deep fry your turkey on Thanksgiving, the Michigan State Fire Marshal is urging caution. Richard Miller says outdoor, gas-fueled turkey fryers using hot oil are simply not safe. He adds they carry an increased risk of fire, burns, injuries and property damage. Miller says those who do prefer fried turkey should buy it already professionally prepared or use the newer type of fryer that does not use oil or infrared turkey fryers. The Fire Marshall says if you do use a propane-fired turkey fryer, never use it in a garage, on or under a deck, breezeway, porch, or any structure that can catch fire. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, approximately 2,000 home fires occur annually on Thanksgiving Day making it the top day for home cooking fires.
