Dark Sky Law Will Protect Areas From Light Pollution

Michigan is protecting some dark sky.

Governor Rick Snyder has signed a bill into law that protects three areas of state-owned land from light pollution.

The law is designed to protect activities like stargazing and nighttime photography.

In the designated areas, outdoor lighting fixtures must have special shields or otherwise must not create light interference with the sky.

The designated areas are Rockport State Recreation Area in Presque Isle and Alpena counties, Negwegon State Park in Alpena and Alcona counties, and Thompson’s Harbor State Park in Presque Isle County.
