COVID, Conventional Safety Urged as Firearm Deer Season Opens Sunday

The firearm deer hunting season begins Sunday. Hunting hours run from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. That means you can hunt on opening day from 7:11 in the morning to 5:59 in the evening.

The close camaraderie of deer camp is worrying health officials. Governor Gretchen Whitmer yesterday encouraged hunters to adjust their plans accordingly…

“If you’re outside and you’re spread apart, you can be safe and do that. But, if you’re all hopping in a car to drive to camp, in a small place where you spend the night, you’ve got to count up how many households are there, and you’ll see that the risk is very high.”

If you plan to stay at camp, officials encourage people to sleep in separate rooms, tents or trailers if possible.

Because of COVID-related budget cuts, deer check-in stations will be open for limited hours this year. COVID-19 safety and health precautions must be observed, including masking and distancing. In many cases, you will be asked to stay in your car.

The usual cautions also apply…
• Don’t overdo it. Each year, hunters suffer heart attacks.
• Wear your hunter’s orange, and keep it on, even if you settle into a comfortable spot, or a blind.
• Know your rifle, and handle it safely.
• Make sure you know what you’re shooting at.
• Hunt with a friend, if possible. If you’re hunting solo, let people know where you’ll be.

We’ll have more information about this year’s firearm deer season on this weekend’s Copper Country Today program. It will be broadcast Sunday morning, and the podcast will be available tomorrow through KeweenawReport.com, and many major podcast platforms.
