COVID-19 is picking up across the state, but not locally. Metro Detroit and north to Port Huron and into the “thumb” of the Lower Peninsula is spiking. The Copper Country remains in check. Houghton, Baraga, and Keweenaw Counties combined for 14 cases over the weekend. That compares to 41 new recoveries. It has been weeks since there was a COVID-19 death regionally.
Vaccinations continue to tick up. The new eligibility requirements are helping younger Houghton County catch up to its neighbors. Its rate of 16.55 percent compares to 21.05 percent in Keweenaw and 19.67 percent in Baraga.
