The findings of a Michigan State Police investigation into extortion claims by former state Representative Todd Courser are now before the Lapeer County Prosecutor for review and possible charges.
However, no details of the investigation have been released and Lapeer County Prosecuting Attorney Tim Turkelson says he won’t comment until at least next week.
Courser says he received a series of anonymous text messages earlier this year threatening to expose the affair he had with former Representative Cindy Gamrat if he did not resign.
He wants Turkelson to make the information public or press charges against whoever is responsible.
The Lapeer Republican publicly released some of the text messages earlier this year, alleging blackmail or extortion and eventually asking the state police to investigate.
Courser, now running for re-election in the 82nd District, believes results of the investigation will prove he did not send the messages himself and could implicate others linked to his downfall.
Courser resigned from the House in the early morning of September 11th, when it became clear that his colleagues were going to expel him, as they did to Gamrat minutes later.
State police and the attorney general’s office continue to investigate whether Courser and Gamrat broke any laws while attempting to cover up their extra-marital affair.
