The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department is investigating several complaints about the use of counterfeit money. Deputies recovered a number of fake bills on Friday, December 21st. Officials say the bills resemble legitimate currency, but many also contain Asian symbols or characters.
Houghton County authorities are pursuing a cooperative investigation with the Baraga County Sheriff’s Department, the Houghton City Police Department, and the Michigan State Police Calumet Post.
With much cash changing hands in advance of Christmas, local business owners are encouraged to inspect currency closely, as some counterfeits could still be in circulation. If you encounter any phony money, contact local law enforcement.
