CopperDog 150 Sled Dog Race Set To Begin

Copperdog Sled Dog Race startDowntown Calumet is in the final preparations before the start of tonight’s CopperDog 150 Sled Dog Race.

The opening ceremony begins at 6:30 with the first team out of the chute at 7pm.

Volunteer Coordinator Brian Donnelly says this is one of the premiere events for the Keweenaw.

The teams of 10 dogs will race to Eagle Harbor tonight, then up to Copper Harbor tomorrow and back down to Calumet on Sunday.

New this year is the CopperDog 80, replacing the single stage race CopperDog 40 that has been held in recent years.

The new two-stage race will begin tonight in Calumet and end in Eagle River as before, but the 6-dog teams will start again in Copper Harbor on Sunday and finish in Calumet.

If you are driving anywhere north on the Keweenaw Peninsula this weekend, please keep an eye out for volunteers working the crossings. It’s their job to try and keep both you and the sled dogs teams waiting to cross safe.

Several activities are planned for Saturday to keep you entertained while the teams are on the trails.

The Dog House Races will be held in Calumet and there will be free sled dog rides for kids in Copper Harbor.
