Copper Country Senior Meals started their congregate meal program up on Monday. The group also prepared for another congregate meal today in Calumet. Copper Country Senior Meals is a vital program that delivers meals and offers times for seniors around Houghton, Hancock, Hubbell, and Calumet. The organization wants to reach more people in the area though, and right now with only six drivers the task is hard. The six drivers, who volunteer their time everyday to prepare and deliver meals, reach close to 200 seniors in the area.
Rich Simpson the Director of Operations is dedicated to continuing the program after last year’s hiatus from COVID-19. The congregate meals offer seniors an opportunity to come together once again and spend time with friends. After the past year of being isolated many are ready to get back outside and socialize. The program is designed to serve people 60 and over at four sites throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula. Seniors who want to share a meal should call ahead so that Copper Country Senior Meals can send the appropriate amount of meals to each location.
All four site locations will continue using COVID-19 cleaning protocols, following guidance from local health departments, UPCAP, and Upper Peninsula Area Agency on Aging. Wearing your mask is welcome, and many staff have been vaccinated. Copper Country Senior Meals wants to keep community safety at the forefront by offering a safe place for seniors to gather together.
