The Chassell, Houghton and Range Lions Clubs in cooperation with the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office are collecting unused drugs for proper disposal. This “pills only” collection will be held on Saturday, May 21, from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. in the Copper Country Mall’s Center Court.
This is part of the Lions Clubs International “Protecting Our Environment” Global Service Acton Campaign. Protecting the environment, especially water supplies, is essential to people around the globe. According to a United Nations study, only 20% of the world’s population has access to clean water, and more people die from unsafe water than from natural disasters or war.
“We are lucky to have good water in the Upper Peninsula, but we must be vigilant to keep it that way,” says Lois Berg, a member of the Chassell Lions. “Disposing of drugs in a responsible manner is one small way to help. If everyone tossed their unused drugs in the trash or flushed them down the toilet, it wouldn’t take long to pollute our water system.”
All you have to do is bring your prescription drug or expired over-the-counter pills to the mall. No liquids will be collected. The person bringing in the pills will dump the pills into a supervised receptacle, and we request that you take the original containers home. No personal information is needed. The collected medicines will be disposed of in a supervised and environmentally approved manner through the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office.
