Consumers Energy business and residential customers in Michigan have been scammed to the tune of more than $81,000, according to the Michigan State Police and the utility.
The utility says there has been more than one-thousand attempts by criminals to con small business owners into making payments they believe are intended for Consumer’s Energy.
The utility says it’s a scam, since they do not ask for payments and personal information over the phone.
The scam has been reported in at least 57 Michigan counties. Capt. Christopher Stolicker of the MSP says they are now working with victims to help bring public awareness to the problem.
