The Michigan Senate has approved bills that supporters say are designed to make sure Michigan students are properly taught about major historical US documents, such as the Constitution.
But approval didn’t come until after some heated debate.
One part of the Republican sponsored package emphasized certain amendments of the Constitution, including the first and second amendments.
Some Democrats argued that no amendments should be emphasized over others.
They noted that the 4th and 13th amendments which deal with illegal searches and voting rights respectively, were not mentioned specifically.
The bills now go to the Michigan House.
